We are in the last few months of 2020. By now many people that set goals at the start of the year have already given up on them. If you set a goal to start a business this year how is it going? It's not too late, but you will need to stay focused to make it happen. In the past, setting my new year goas was typical, and out started like many people. I started excited and pumped up about making changes in my life. I set goals motivated by the idea of what the future holds and having each year be a kind of clean slate.
Yet by the first month, maybe two, most of us have not made any movement or progress toward our goals. I can remember feeling deeply disappointed. How does it make you feel? Year after year, I would start out excited and end up disappointed sometimes even angry with myself. Later I started to realize my goals were no different than other activities in my life. I decided I would do things differently because this very wise genius guy(Einstein) once said: “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insanity”.
So I began to look at things that I did in my daily life consistently. I'm talking simple things like waking up early, working out consistently, housework, and juggling the running of my business with working full-time. All of these activities had a plan, a system, and milestones just like a project does.
Disclaimer, the only thing on the list I actually LIKE doing is my business, but I decided they were all necessary to have a productive life, so I CHOSE to add them to my routine. Success came when I implemented these steps. Your job is to envision the ideal life, choose your goal, create a plan, implement a system, and celebrate milestones.
The goals I set are based on the ideal life I want. I took some time to think about what my ideal life would look like. This Vision required that I have a routine for most of the things I did, in particular, the boring or unpleasant tasks. Visualize the life you want, to choose your goal(s) to create a plan to get you there, implement a system for everything, and celebrate milestones. But you have more than one goal so I suggest you start off in the smaller or easier one first, getting that one into a routine so when you start seeing progress it motivates you and gives you the confidence to take on the larger goals.
So you have your vision of your ideal life, now it is time to go after it and make sure to include every area of your life. Next, get the vision down on paper so you can see it regularly. Write it in detail every day, Every time you read you will create images in your mind. Use all the areas of your life: Personal, Business, Health, Wellness, and Spiritual.
Next, you create a plan to get to the goal. What is your goal? Want to lose weight, earn a certain amount of money, or meet the love of your life? By having a specific goal, I am sure you have heard of smart goals - specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Being specific about your goals will ensure you create a plan to achieve them. Your plan is the steps or actions it takes to accomplish the goal. No matter how small, your goals need a plan.
If your goal is your destination, your plan is your map. Once you have the plan you create the strategy to achieve your goals. Next, you make it as easy as possible to be successful by creating a system. While training for my first marathon, I had a system for everything. From what and when I ate, to when I ran, everything. My run training was the plan I used to accomplish the goal and it was tough so I made everything else require as little thought as possible by creating a system or routine for the recurring tasks.
Next, you create and celebrate the milestones. In the past, this area has been a struggle for me. I was an “all or nothing” type of person so it was difficult to celebrate small achievements. Yet, it is important to your success to acknowledge the small consistent actions you take toward your goals. It is very important to celebrate the baby steps, the small steps you take on the way to your goals. It adds confidence and helps keep your eye on the prize.
Every day we are consistently juggling multiple obligations and responsibilities. Choosing to go after the goals you set for yourself is a huge accomplishment. Good luck, you can make it happen!
